Sometimes you just can’t do it alone and you need someone to talk to. You need not only an objective third party, but someone with counseling skills who can help you process your issues. Since everyone is different and no one size fits all, I use a variety of therapeutic techniques. If a personal faith is an integral part of your life that can be woven into our work together. Let’s talk.

Philosophy

Dr. Cuomo has worked in the mental health field for more than 20 years. She has a passion for working with individuals who have experienced severe trauma and mental health distress that has interfered with their quality of life and has negatively affected their level of self-esteem and potential as remarkable human beings. She works with all ages, but particularly enjoys working with adolescents.

Dr. Cuomo works from a therapeutic approach that utilizes the therapeutic relationship as a stepping stone to healing and growth. She uses interventions that will produce change in the clients’ negative thinking and faulty belief systems that have perpetuated their current problems. She works in alliance with the client to achieve a greater quality of life for the future.

Philosophy

I subscribe to an eclectic approach to counseling based in Cognitive (Beck) and Rational-Emotive (Ellis) Behavioral therapies with other influences as needed. I also take a (W) holistic approach to counseling that involves respect for the well being of the whole person physically, mentally, and spiritually without any pre-disposition toward what the client brings to the table. While helping the clients in self examining which of their practices, values and experiences have been helpful or harmful in their lives, my goal is to assist clients in determining how a healthy value system can assist with developing healthy problem solving methods in their daily lives. I believe that Freud’s concept of the “Super Ego” stage of human development where one’s values serve to govern our system of dos and don’ts, should and should nots can be heavily influenced by one’s spiritual beliefs, set of rules or lack there of. I believe in the commonality of religious principles as pointed out by Jeffrey Moses’ text “Oneness, Great Principles Shared By All Religions” (1989) where he points out one “golden rule” inherent in all religions, and that is “Do unto to others as you would have them do unto you“, or “Do unto all men as you would have them do unto you, and reject for others what you would reject for yourselves”, or “Hurt not others with that which pains yourself“, or “What is hurtful to yourself, do not to your fellow man, that is the whole of the torch”, or “Treat others as thou wouldst thyself be treated, and do nothing to thy neighbor which hereafter thou wouldst not have thy neighbor do to thee”. (In order …Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, and Hinduism).

Pastoral and Clinical Perspective

1. Since we are made in God’s image, we are assured that God will help us, his children, mature spiritually and emotionally. We also believe that every good gift of healing comes from the One who knows and loves us: when we are hurting, afraid, lonely, or sad, we are able to access God’s love and counsel through scripture, prayer, the advice of compassionate friends, and through a caring therapeutic relationship. 2. The quality of our relationships is influenced by our habitual ways of thinking. Distorted thinking patterns that contribute to symptoms of depression or anxiety are significantly reduced through cognitive behavioral therapy. Clients who practice corrective thinking can experience improved self-image, new optimism, and hope for the future. 3. Each of us is working on a mental blueprint of one or several personal goals. Part of my job is to help you clarify and verbalize your goals, assess where you are now in your journey, determine what is working for you, and encourage your continued progress. I offer clients a holistic perspective that incorporates their values; physical, social, and mental assets; skills, humor, and hope.

My counseling approach is based on an eclectic model and is primarily influenced by my Christian walk with my savior Jesus Christ, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Client Centered Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy. During therapy we will work together to assess where you are experiencing difficulties and what goals you have for therapy. This may require several methods including the intake process, tests, homework, and open conversation between counselor and client. By establishing a positive and trusting relationship, I will attempt to assist you with mental health needs.

Philosophy: I realize that life is full of changes, also called trials. These trials help us to develop different perceptions and attitudes. The changes/trials should make us lean more intensively on God and His word. We are never alone; God is always with us as He allows us to go through different life stages. I feel that God uses vehicles (counselors) to assist persons with life changes/trials so that they can live a more abundant life during and after the storm.

I want you to know that there is Hope and God has provided persons that are equipped to guide you through the changes and trials.
What God said to Joshua, He says to you, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Joshua 1:5
